PhilippinesContemporary art in the Philippines has been significantly influenced by
economic and cultural elements over the past decade. Recently, the
Philippines enjoyed the comfort of increased economic growth. Bigger
cities have emerged with elaborate shopping centers, sky scrapers, and
golf courses. As a result, the demand for art in these public arenas has
increased. Gallery-like stores have been brought into the contexts of
shopping malls, making art more accessible to potential buyers. The
market for art has been booming ever-since, which in turn has motivated
artists to produce more rapidly.
Another highlight in contemporary Philippino art has been the
Philippine Centennial Celebration in 1998. It led artists to explore issues of
national identity, freedom, and ultimately resulted in deeper appreciation for
the country's culture. Contemporary art continues to evolve and expand as
it explores alternative materials and mediums across different disciplines.
Installation art is one such expressive medium which artists such as
Alfredo J. D. Aquilizan have pioneered.
