Alfredo Aquilizan
Alfredo Juan Aquilizan is a Philippino artist who has taken bold steps
in his career. He is well known as someone who is bold and
unconventional. Alfredo is definitely not mainstream. His artistic endeavors
embody the power and attitude that many lack the confidence to express
for themselves. Alfredo has put into question the very idea and nature of
art. He has sought to create new ideas about art and to expand upon
previous definitions and limitations. He has employed the use of
indigenous materials as well as those which are manufactured, and has
drawn upon current technology as a medium in his installations and
performances.
Alfredo's installations appeal to a wide audience. In his work, he asks
the audience to become part of the piece as they interact with the
presentation. Alfredo has an advantage of having studied abroad and
learned from foreign innovative art styles. His knowledge and exposure to
different countries' art forms has given his artwork a unique appeal to a
larger, more global audience. Alfredo's installations are also mobile. They
can be adapted to fit and conform to a variety of sites and times.
Alfredo Aquilizan is a pioneer in his field as well as in his country. He has
risked with intensity and reaped far more than he has sown. In a country
struggling to maintain national identity and cultural roots, Alfredo has
fearlessly stepped outside of the boundaries to bridge the gap between
cutting edge and conservative culture. He has created a new category for
art in his country and is paving a new path to a global art platform. Alfredo
is a perfect example of how contemporary artists are blending techniques
of the present with values of the past to make expressions of the future.
