Grading: Achieving a high grade in the course will depend as much on your initiative as on your fulfilling of regular class assignments. You will be expected to do the class readings each week (on which your Teaching Assistants will be thoroughly briefed).

Essay of 5-7 pages duration (I am trying to encougage conciseness in the hopes that it will breed substance). The paper will ask students to explore on their own (using criteria we develop in class) a live art encounter of their choice. I will approve all topics beforehand. Students may also opt to put together a performance work to be presented during 10th week for the same 25% credit. Number obviously limited.
25%
Participation in section discussions (I'll circulate among the sections but will rely on the TA for this assessment).
10%
Final exam (multiple choice in class plus a take-home essay (ca. 800 words) that challenges students to explore commonalities among the areas we have explored (connect the dots, if you will).
