There are two wonderful references here, First, the waltz is a European (Viennese) phenomenon, and the use made here is clearly parodistic. Second, where the ragtag (but wonderful sounding!) band throws in the cliched melody known best by Westerners, the parody and good-natured fun is equally apparent. As Professor Waterman will show us next week, exploring intent and meaning is one of the most rewarding aspects of studying music.
